I try to

ESTABLISH MUTUAL EXPECTATIONS
We don’t need to be controlled if we’re heading in the right direction. Clearly agreed mutual expectations worked out in advance go a long way to mitigating the worst effects of that business bugbear of bad communication.

MONITOR WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
Things can go wrong and relationships with people deteriorate. Like marriages, they need to be worked on and it’s best to do the work long before it’s needed. Instead of adopting an if it ain’t broken, don’t fix it stance, go for if it ain’t broken, keep servicing it.

SET PEOPLE AT EASE
Smiling, listening, a bit of self-deprication and a pinch of honest flattery are key. Setting people at ease can be the ultimate business facilitator.

THANK PEOPLE – RESPECT TIME AND TALENT
The quickest way to upset someone is not to value their work. If you want to get something done a second time, thank them the first time.

GET IT IN CONTEXT – UNDERSTANDING ALL VIEWS
It used to be all about command and control in a hierarchical structure. Now it’s all about being able to communicate and share.
